US-Based Nigerian Says He Spent Over ₦1 Million to Renew His Passport

 

A United States-based Nigerian has sparked widespread reactions after revealing that he spent more than ₦1 million to renew his Nigerian international passport, highlighting the financial burden many Nigerians abroad face when accessing consular services. His experience has reignited conversations about the cost, accessibility and efficiency of passport renewal for citizens in the diaspora. 

According to the Nigerian, the total amount covered not only the official passport renewal fee but also additional expenses such as travel to the Nigerian consulate, accommodation, transportation, postage and other incidental costs incurred during the application process. He explained that securing an appointment and completing the renewal required multiple trips, significantly increasing the overall cost.

He noted that while the official charges alone were substantial, the associated logistics made the process far more expensive than many applicants anticipated. The experience, he said, reflects the challenges faced by many Nigerians living abroad, particularly those who must travel long distances to reach Nigerian diplomatic missions because of limited consular locations. 

The disclosure has generated mixed reactions on social media, with many Nigerians in the diaspora sharing similar experiences and calling for improved consular services. Some urged the Federal Government to expand passport processing centres abroad, introduce more efficient digital systems and reduce the time and cost involved in obtaining essential travel documents. Others argued that the high overall expense often results more from travel and accommodation costs than from the official passport fee itself. 

The incident has once again drawn attention to the broader issue of consular service delivery for Nigerians overseas. Stakeholders have continued to advocate reforms that would make passport renewal more accessible, affordable and convenient, ensuring that citizens living outside the country can obtain vital documents without incurring excessive financial and logistical burdens.
