French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to pay a state visit to Nigeria later this year, in a move aimed at strengthening diplomatic, economic and strategic relations between both countries. The planned visit was announced by the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, who described it as a major milestone in the growing partnership between France and Nigeria.

According to the French envoy, the visit will focus on expanding cooperation in key sectors, including trade, investment, agriculture, energy, security, education and cultural exchanges. It is also expected to build on the renewed momentum in bilateral relations following recent engagements between President Bola Tinubu and President Macron.

The ambassador noted that France sees Nigeria as a strategic partner in West Africa and expressed confidence that the visit would provide an opportunity for both leaders to deepen collaboration on regional security, climate action, innovation and economic development. He added that discussions would also seek to encourage greater French investment in Nigeria’s growing economy.

Macron’s trip is expected to feature high-level bilateral talks, the signing of cooperation agreements and meetings with government officials and business leaders. Analysts believe the visit reflects France’s broader effort to strengthen ties with English-speaking African nations as it redefines its relationship with the continent through partnerships based on mutual economic growth and shared interests.

If confirmed, the visit will mark Macron’s first official trip to Nigeria since his 2018 visit and is expected to further enhance cooperation between Abuja and Paris across political, commercial and security sectors.
