President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the Nigerian military and other security agencies following the successful rescue of 308 kidnap victims from Kwara and Niger states, describing the operation as a major victory in the country’s ongoing fight against terrorism, banditry and kidnapping. The President said the rescue reflects the growing effectiveness of intelligence-driven security operations and inter-agency collaboration.
According to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the victims comprised 163 persons abducted from Woro community in Kwara State and 145 others kidnapped from communities in neighbouring Niger State. The rescue was carried out through a coordinated operation involving the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force.
President Tinubu commended the professionalism, courage and sacrifice of the security personnel involved in the operation, stating that their commitment continues to restore hope to communities affected by criminal violence. He assured Nigerians that his administration would sustain investments in intelligence gathering, surveillance technology and security logistics to strengthen the country’s capacity to combat criminal groups.
The rescued victims were taken to Wawa Cantonment in Niger State, where they received medical attention, psychological support and other humanitarian assistance before arrangements were made for their reunification with their families. Officials disclosed that the operation followed months of intelligence gathering and targeted offensives against criminal hideouts within the Kainji Lake National Park Forest, which has become a major base for armed gangs operating across parts of north-central Nigeria.
The President urged security agencies to maintain the momentum by intensifying operations against kidnappers, terrorists and other criminal networks while strengthening collaboration with local communities. He also encouraged Nigerians to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, stressing that public cooperation remains vital to achieving lasting peace and security across the country.
