Three biological brothers serving as members of a local vigilante group have been killed after suspected gunmen attacked Tarai community in Jol District of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State, in the latest wave of violence to hit the troubled region. The attack occurred at about 10:47 p.m. on Tuesday, when the assailants reportedly stormed the community and opened fire on the volunteers who were on routine night patrol protecting residents from possible attacks.
The victims were identified as Dachung Danjuma (51), Victor Danjuma (37), and Nyam Danjuma (35). Community members said the three brothers died at the scene after they were ambushed while carrying out their surveillance duties. A resident, Lyop Bitrus, described the incident as devastating, saying the brothers sacrificed their lives while defending their community against armed attackers.
The tragedy has left a grieving family behind, particularly the household of Victor Danjuma, who is survived by his wife and five children. Residents disclosed that his family had fled the area two weeks earlier following an attack on the neighbouring Tan Jol community and had planned to return after security conditions appeared to improve. The latest attack shattered those hopes before the family could be reunited.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) confirmed the incident, with its spokesperson, Rwang Tengwong, condemning the killings as heartbreaking and blaming the persistent attacks on inadequate security across vulnerable communities in Plateau State. The association called on security agencies to intensify operations in affected areas, identify those responsible and bring them to justice to prevent further bloodshed.
As of the time of reporting, the Plateau State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the attack. The latest killings have renewed concerns over the worsening security situation in Plateau State, where repeated attacks on rural communities continue to claim lives despite ongoing security operations and appeals for stronger government intervention.
