The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Niger State chapter, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, has warned Christians against withdrawing from political participation, saying silence could eventually cost them their rights and influence in society.
Yohanna reportedly gave the warning while speaking on the need for Christians to become more actively involved in politics and governance. He stressed that Christians should not remain passive when decisions affecting their communities and fundamental rights are being made.
The CAN chairman urged Christians to participate responsibly in the political process by voting, seeking elective positions and engaging with government at different levels. He suggested that political participation was necessary for Christians to contribute to policies and decisions that affect the wider society.
According to him, leaving politics entirely to others could make it difficult for Christians to protect their interests or influence policies that affect their communities. He therefore encouraged church members to see political engagement as part of their civic responsibility.
Yohanna’s comments come amid continuing debates over the role of religious communities in Nigerian politics and governance. Christian leaders have increasingly called on members of the faith to become more politically conscious while also emphasising the need for competent and accountable leadership.
The Niger CAN chairman also cautioned Christians against political apathy, urging them to use their constitutional rights responsibly and remain committed to promoting justice, peace and good governance.
He maintained that active participation should not be driven by religious sentiments alone, but by the desire to promote leaders and policies that will benefit society as a whole.
