Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the recent abduction of a lieutenant colonel and a civilian in Enugu State, describing the incident as further evidence that insecurity has become a full-scale national crisis requiring urgent and coordinated action.
In a statement shared on his official social media platforms, Obi expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation across Nigeria, noting that attacks, kidnappings and violent crimes have continued to spread despite repeated assurances from authorities. He said the Enugu incident underscored the need for stronger measures to protect both security personnel and ordinary citizens.
The former Anambra State governor called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of all kidnapped victims while strengthening intelligence gathering and law enforcement operations nationwide. He stressed that safeguarding lives and property remains the foremost responsibility of any government and urged authorities to treat the security situation with greater urgency.
Obi also extended his sympathies to the families of the abducted victims and others affected by insecurity across the country. He appealed to Nigerians to support security agencies with credible information that could aid ongoing efforts to combat criminal activities, while emphasising the importance of unity in confronting the nation’s security challenges.
Reiterating his longstanding call for comprehensive security reforms, Obi maintained that Nigeria must adopt a more proactive and people-centred approach to tackling insecurity. He warned that without decisive action, the continued rise in kidnappings, banditry and other violent crimes could further undermine national development, investor confidence and public trust in government institutions.
