A former presidential candidate and statesman, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has expressed concern over Nigeria’s current socio-economic challenges, saying that although he sympathises with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his primary concern remains the future of the country and the welfare of its citizens. His remarks come amid continued public debate over the Federal Government’s economic reforms and security policies.
Speaking during an interview, Olawepo-Hashim said President Tinubu inherited numerous structural and economic problems that have madeh governance extremely difficult. However, he stressed that while acknowledging the magnitude of those inherited challenges, the administration must be judged by its ability to provide practical solutions that improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
He noted that Nigerians continue to grapple with rising inflation, unemployment, insecurity and the increasing cost of living, arguing that these issues require urgent and decisive action. According to him, national leadership should prioritise policies that stimulate economic growth, create jobs, strengthen institutions and restore public confidence in government.
Olawepo-Hashim also called for greater unity among political leaders, urging them to place national interest above partisan considerations. He emphasised that addressing Nigeria’s longstanding challenges would require collaboration across party lines, constructive engagement with stakeholders and sustained commitment to reforms capable of delivering long-term stability and development.
While reiterating that he bears no personal animosity towards the President, Olawepo-Hashim maintained that the country’s future should remain the overriding priority. He urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to tackle economic hardship, improve security and implement policies that directly enhance the welfare of Nigerians, saying history would ultimately judge every administration by its impact on the nation and its people.
