A lawyer representing Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Aloy Ejimakor, has described his client as a victim of what he called “prosecutorial overkill.”
Ejimakor made the comment while speaking about the prolonged legal battle involving Kanu, who has remained at the centre of Nigeria’s separatist controversy and criminal prosecution.
The lawyer argued that the prosecution has pursued Kanu with excessive force, saying the case has gone beyond what he considers a proportionate application of the law. He maintained that the manner in which the matter has been handled raises questions about the government’s approach to the IPOB leader.
Kanu has faced terrorism-related charges brought by the Federal Government, while his legal team has consistently challenged aspects of his prosecution and detention.
Ejimakor has remained one of Kanu’s most vocal legal representatives, frequently criticising the government’s handling of the case and calling for what he considers due process and respect for Kanu’s fundamental rights.
The lawyer’s latest comments come amid continued debate over Kanu’s prosecution and the wider political and security issues surrounding IPOB and separatist agitation in the South-East.
The Federal Government, however, has maintained its position that Kanu should face the legal consequences of the allegations against him and has defended the prosecution.
The case remains one of Nigeria’s most politically sensitive legal proceedings, with Kanu’s supporters demanding his release while government authorities continue to insist on the judicial process.
