Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has taken a swipe at Arsenal following the Premier League club’s failure to sign Real Madrid forward VinÃcius Júnior.
Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel mocked Arsenal supporters who had been confident that the Brazilian winger would leave Real Madrid for the Gunners. VinÃcius has instead agreed to remain at the Spanish giants, signing a new contract that reportedly runs until 2032.
Mikel questioned why VinÃcius would choose Arsenal, pointing to the difference in the clubs’ recent European and domestic records. He also suggested that the transfer speculation may have been used by the Brazilian’s camp to strengthen his negotiating position with Real Madrid.
The former Chelsea midfielder said he had received messages from Arsenal supporters who were convinced the transfer would happen, making the eventual outcome an opportunity for him to tease the club’s fans.
Arsenal had been linked with an ambitious move for VinÃcius during the summer transfer window, but the deal failed to materialise. The Brazilian ultimately opted to continue his career at Real Madrid, ending speculation over a potential move to the Emirates.
Mikel’s comments have added another layer to the rivalry between Arsenal and Chelsea supporters, with the former Chelsea star using the failed transfer to reignite his familiar banter with the Gunners’ fanbase.
