The Ghana Police Service has foiled what it described as a planned robbery operation in the Labone area of Accra, killing two suspected robbers and arresting another suspect following a shootout.
According to the police, intelligence was received at about 10:45am on Thursday, August 13, 2026, that an armed gang was preparing to attack three banks in the Labone area — GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank. Police officers were immediately deployed to the area, where they reportedly spotted members of the gang in vehicles parked close to the banks.
The police said one of the vehicles sped away after the suspects noticed the officers. A chase followed, resulting in the arrest of one suspect identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi, while another occupant of the vehicle escaped.
According to the police account, occupants of a second vehicle also attempted to flee while firing at the officers. The police said they responded, leading to a gun battle in which two suspects were fatally shot. Their bodies were subsequently deposited at a morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The police reportedly recovered two vehicles — a Toyota Highlander and a Hyundai Tucson — as well as a pistol following the operation. Maazi remains in custody and is assisting investigators with the ongoing investigation, while efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other members of the alleged syndicate.
However, the incident has generated some controversy after GCB Bank disputed the police’s description of events. The bank said there was no robbery or attempted robbery at its Labone branch and maintained that the bank itself was not breached. It added that no customers, employees, funds or property belonging to the bank were affected.
