Former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Peter Ajang Azi, has died at the age of 57.
Azi’s death was announced by a family member, John Azi, in Jos on Thursday. According to the family, the former lawmaker died on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. The cause of death was not disclosed.
In a statement announcing his passing, the Azi Ajang family described him as a son, brother and father who had peacefully joined his creator. The family said it had accepted his death as an act of God and would announce burial arrangements in due course.
Azi served as Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly from June 2015 to July 2018. His tenure coincided with the administration of former Governor Simon Lalong, during which he presided over the state legislature and played a prominent role in Plateau’s political affairs.
After leaving the speakership, Azi remained active in politics and was associated with the All Progressives Congress. His years in public service established him as an important figure within Plateau’s political landscape.
News of his death has drawn tributes from political associates and former colleagues. Lalong, who served as Plateau State governor during part of Azi’s tenure as Speaker, described his death as a painful loss and praised his commitment to public service, humility and loyalty.
Lalong also recalled Azi’s contribution to the development of Plateau State, particularly his service at the grassroots. He described the late former Speaker as a trusted political ally and a committed member of the political family.
