A fire outbreak at Yalenguruza Quarters in Gombe State has destroyed property estimated at about ₦80 million, after flames engulfed two residential flats.
The incident occurred at Yalenguruza Quarters, opposite MacConnels Hotel, Gombe, with the Federal Fire Service, Gombe State Command, confirming the outbreak in a statement issued on Friday.
According to the Federal Fire Service, a distress call was received at about 3:03pm, prompting the command to immediately mobilise a multipurpose water tender from its ATM Fire Station. Firefighters arrived at the scene around 3:15pm and found that the blaze had affected two separate residential flats containing several rooms.
The firefighting crew quickly commenced operations and eventually brought the fire under control using water from the fire tender. The prompt response prevented the flames from spreading to neighbouring properties and helped save an estimated ₦150 million worth of property.
Fortunately, no casualty was recorded in the incident. Personnel from the Gombe State Fire Service and officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Gona Division, also assisted during the emergency response.
After the flames were completely extinguished, firefighters inspected the affected buildings and confirmed that there was no remaining fire or immediate threat. The team returned to its station at about 5:38pm.
While the exact cause of the fire was not disclosed in the report, the incident has once again highlighted the importance of fire prevention and rapid emergency response, particularly in densely populated residential areas.
The Federal Fire Service urged residents to remain vigilant and observe basic fire-safety measures in their homes. It also advised members of the public to report fire outbreaks immediately to the nearest fire station so emergency responders can intervene before flames spread and cause greater destruction.
