Popular Nigerian comedian and content creator Chukwuebuka Amuzie, popularly known as Brain Jotter, has raised the alarm after he was allegedly harassed by suspected street touts while driving in Lagos.
The comedian shared a video of the encounter on his Instagram page on Tuesday, showing a group of men confronting him and his crew on a Lagos road. According to reports, the men blocked his vehicle and demanded a settlement before allowing him to pass.
In the video, one of the men could be heard identifying himself as a “lion.” Brain Jotter responded to the incident with a sarcastic caption, writing, “Nigerian zoo keepers are the worst,” while lamenting what he described as the escape of a lion from the “zoo.”
The incident has drawn attention to the persistent concerns over the activities of suspected area boys and street touts in parts of Lagos. Entertainers and other professionals have recently reported alleged harassment, extortion and threats while carrying out their activities across the state.
The development also comes shortly after DJ Salt of Life, the younger sister of Afrobeats star Ayra Starr, alleged that suspected area boys damaged her vehicle after mistaking her for the singer and demanding money from her.
Lagos State authorities have previously said they are taking steps to remove street urchins from major roads and public spaces. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab has also appealed to members of the public to stop giving cash to touts, arguing that such payments encourage the practice and make the streets more lucrative for them.
Brain Jotter’s experience has once again renewed concerns over the safety of motorists and residents and the persistent problem of alleged street extortion in Lagos.
