The Bauchi State Government has directed security agencies to launch a comprehensive crackdown on illegal mining activities across the state, warning that anyone found engaging in the illicit trade will be arrested and prosecuted, regardless of status or political influence. The directive was issued by Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed during a meeting with the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Maxwell Dangana, at the Government House in Bauchi.
Governor Mohammed described illegal mining as a major driver of insecurity in Bauchi, particularly in Alkaleri Local Government Area and other border communities, where criminal groups have allegedly exploited mineral resources to finance violent activities. He urged the military and other security agencies to intensify intelligence gathering, dismantle illegal mining syndicates and strengthen collaboration with neighbouring states to curb the menace.
In a strong demonstration of his administration’s zero-tolerance stance, the governor declared that no one should be spared, including members of his own family, if found culpable. “Even if my son is involved in illegal mining, deal with him according to the law,” he said, stressing that the rule of law must prevail over personal or political interests.
Mohammed also commended the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their swift response to recent security incidents in Alkaleri, noting that the rapid deployment of troops restored confidence among affected communities. He pledged continued support for security operations, including the deployment of part of the ₦3 billion Federal Government security intervention fund recently allocated to the state to strengthen security logistics and operations.
The governor further called for stronger cooperation among the military, police, local government authorities, traditional rulers and community leaders to combat banditry, illegal mining and other organised crimes. He maintained that eliminating illegal mining would not only improve security but also protect the environment, safeguard legitimate mineral resources and boost lawful economic development across Bauchi State.
