Three firefighters sustained varying degrees of injuries following a fire outbreak at an AYM Shafa filling station in Area 3, Garki, Abuja, after a petrol tanker caught fire and exploded.
The incident occurred on Thursday night, with the FCT Fire Service receiving information about the fire at about 9:44 p.m. Firefighters and emergency personnel were immediately deployed to the scene to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to surrounding structures.
The service’s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Muhammad, confirmed the incident on Friday, saying the fire involved a tanker loaded with approximately 45,000 litres of petroleum product. He said preliminary assessment showed that the fire affected the filling station and adjoining structures, including an office belonging to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
Muhammad said three firefighters sustained injuries during the emergency response. He praised the personnel for their bravery and professionalism, noting that their prompt intervention helped prevent the incident from developing into a much larger disaster.
The fire service also acknowledged the assistance of other emergency agencies, security personnel and members of the public who supported the coordinated response.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tanker explosion and assess the extent of damage to the affected facilities.
