Former Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro has explained why he once described former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola as a “toy governor,” saying the remark was aimed at highlighting what he considered Fashola’s limited political independence during his time in office. Obanikoro revisited the controversial statement while responding to recent comments made by Fashola on governance and security funding in Lagos State.
According to Obanikoro, his criticism was never about Fashola’s intellect or administrative competence but rather his belief that the former governor did not exercise sufficient autonomy in taking major political decisions. He argued that Lagos requires a governor who can make independent choices and provide decisive leadership without undue external influence.
Obanikoro also dismissed suggestions that his comments were motivated by personal animosity, insisting that they reflected his political assessment of governance in Lagos. He maintained that democratic leadership demands courage, accountability and the ability to make difficult decisions in the public interest, regardless of political pressure.
The former minister’s remarks come weeks after Fashola stated during a public forum that he did not receive or operate a “security vote” while serving as Lagos governor, saying all security-related expenditures under his administration were captured within the state’s approved budget.
