The The government of Japan has approved a sharp increase in visa application fees, raising costs by about 400% for Nigerians and other foreign nationals in what is the country’s first major revision in decades.
Under the new structure, the fee for a single-entry visa will rise from ¥3,000 (about $18.60) to ¥15,000 (about $92.99), while a multiple-entry visa will increase from ¥6,000 to ¥30,000 ($187.97). The changes are expected to take effect from July 1, 2026.
Officials say the revision applies to all applicants regardless of nationality and is the first broad adjustment to visa fees in about 48 years, dating back to 1978.
According to Japanese authorities, the hike is driven by rising administrative costs, inflation, exchange rate changes, and the growing number of foreign residents and visitors in the country, which has placed additional pressure on immigration services.
The new policy has sparked attention globally, especially among frequent travellers and students, as Japan also reviews broader immigration-related charges, including residency and permanent stay applications, which could increase significantly in the coming years.
