The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has come under intense criticism on social media following the appearance of Nigerian singer Fola (Folarin Odunlami) at his final-year project defence in an outfit many Nigerians described as inappropriate for an academic exercise. Photos and videos from the event quickly went viral, igniting a heated debate over dress codes and whether celebrities are treated differently within higher institutions.
Fola, who reportedly defended his project in the Department of Economics Education, Faculty of Education, arrived on campus in a Cadillac Escalade wearing baggy trousers, a shirt, a scarf and several accessories. His appearance immediately attracted crowds of students and generated widespread reactions online, with many questioning whether the university had relaxed its standards because of his celebrity status.
Several social media users claimed that ordinary students had previously been prevented from defending their projects over alleged dress code violations, while Fola was allowed to proceed without objection. Others argued that it would have cost the singer nothing to dress in more formal attire for such an important academic event. However, there is no official confirmation from UNILAG that Fola violated any dress code or received preferential treatment.
Not everyone agreed with the criticism. Some students and social media users defended both the singer and the university, noting that corporate attire is not expressly compulsory for project defences in many Nigerian universities. Others praised Fola for balancing his music career with his education, describing his successful completion of his project defence as an achievement worth celebrating regardless of his outfit.
As the debate continues online, neither Fola nor the University of Lagos has issued an official statement addressing the controversy. The incident has nonetheless reignited discussions about dress codes, consistency in enforcing university regulations and whether public figures should be held to the same standards as other students.
