Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has cautioned Nigerians and other Africans against enlisting in the Russian Army to fight in the ongoing war against Ukraine, warning them not to allow themselves to be used as mercenaries.
In a post on his X account on Thursday, Sani acknowledged the historical role of the former Soviet Union (USSR) in supporting African countries during their independence struggles but noted that Ukraine was also part of the USSR before its dissolution in 1991.
He wrote:
“Nigerians and other Africans should desist from going to Russia to enlist in the Army for them to fight against Ukraine. It’s a historical fact that Russia supported Africa during our independence struggle, but Ukraine was also part of that USSR. Don’t allow yourself to be mercenaries.”
Sani’s warning comes amid reports that some Africans have been recruited to fight for Russia in the conflict, with concerns that many are lured by promises of employment or financial rewards before being deployed to the frontlines.
The Russia–Ukraine war, which escalated into a full-scale invasion in February 2022, continues to attract foreign fighters on both sides despite repeated warnings from governments and human rights organisations about the risks involved
