Manchester United and England defender Harry Maguire has been given a 15-month suspended prison sentence by a Greek court over his role in a 2020 altercation on the island of Mykonos, legal and sports sources report.
The Greek court on the island of Syros found Maguire guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery stemming from an August 2020 incident that involved a confrontation with police officers while he was on holiday with his family.
Under Greek law, a suspended sentence means Maguire will not serve immediate jail time unless he commits another offence during the suspension period. The original conviction for the same case had previously been quashed on appeal which triggered a retrial after several delays before the latest verdict.
Maguire, who has consistently denied any wrongdoing, was not present in court for the latest hearing and is reported to be preparing to play for Manchester United. His legal team has announced intentions to appeal the ruling to Greece’s Supreme Court in a bid to clear his name.
Despite the suspended sentence, there are no immediate travel restrictions on Maguire, meaning he remains potentially eligible for competitive fixtures, including the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup should he be selected.
