The United Kingdom has nominated Foreign Secretary David Lammy to serve as its next Governor at the World Bank, replacing Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves in the role. The appointment forms part of the UK government’s efforts to strengthen its influence in global development and international financial institutions.
The British government said Lammy will represent the UK on the World Bank’s Board of Governors, the institution’s highest decision-making body, where member countries are represented by governors who oversee major policy decisions, membership matters and capital increases. The position is separate from the day-to-day management of the World Bank, which is handled by its president and executive directors.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration said the appointment reflects the growing link between Britain’s foreign policy and international development agenda. As Foreign Secretary, Lammy has championed stronger partnerships with developing nations, climate resilience, economic growth and reforms to global financial institutions.
