A United Kingdom court has sentenced Obinwa Obichukwu, a 45-year-old Nigerian, to two years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting a woman twice at Euston railway station in London. The sentence was handed down at the Inner London Crown Court, following his conviction on two counts of sexual assault.
The court heard that the offences occurred on August 20, 2023, when Obichukwu approached the victim on Euston Road and initiated a conversation by asking about the music she was listening to. Prosecutors said he then placed his arm around her, repeatedly professed his love, invited her to his home and held her hand as they walked toward the station.
According to the prosecution, the situation escalated when the woman reached the entrance to Euston station. Obichukwu allegedly blocked her path and sexually assaulted her before following her into the station, where he assaulted her a second time near the ticket barriers. The victim managed to push him away and escape before reporting the incident to the British Transport Police (BTP). Investigators later identified the suspect through CCTV footage.
During the trial, Obichukwu claimed the encounter was consensual. However, the jury rejected his defence and found him guilty. In addition to the two-year prison sentence, the court imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and directed that he be placed on the UK Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
Reacting to the judgment, British Transport Police Detective Constable Daniel Burke commended the victim for her courage in reporting the incident. He said the conviction demonstrated the force’s commitment to tackling violence against women and girls, urging anyone who experiences or witnesses sexual offences on the railway network to report them so offenders can be brought to justice.
