A UK-based Nigerian lawyer, Baron Chymaker, has announced that he has formally started the process of renouncing his Nigerian citizenship. He said his Nigerian legal representative had submitted his application to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and that the required fees had been paid. Chymaker disclosed the development on X (formerly Twitter), stating that he was awaiting approval of the application. He wrote that he had received confirmation from his lawyer that the documents had been submitted and that he was looking forward to the approval.
The lawyer is known for his commentary on international law, Nigerian and UK legal practice, cryptocurrency issues, and judicial matters. He had previously criticised aspects of Nigeria’s legal system, particularly the application of the doctrine of stare decisis (judicial precedent).
As of the report, the SGF’s office had not issued an official statement on the application. Under Nigerian law, renunciation of citizenship requires government approval before it becomes effective
