At least two people have died during massive celebrations in Mexico City after Mexico’s 2–0 victory over Ecuador secured the country’s first FIFA World Cup knockout-stage win in 40 years.

According to the Mexico City Health Secretariat, a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died from asphyxiation (suffocation) after thousands of fans gathered around the Angel of Independence monument on Paseo de la Reforma to celebrate the historic win. Emergency responders attempted to revive the victims but were unsuccessful.

Authorities said the incident occurred as enormous crowds packed the city’s main boulevard following Mexico’s qualification for the Round of 16. More than one million people were estimated to have joined the celebrations.

Some reports later indicated that a third person, a 48-year-old woman, also died after being taken to hospital. However, while Reuters reported the third fatality, Mexican authorities had not officially confirmed it at the time of some earlier reports.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged fans to celebrate responsibly as the tournament continues. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy
