Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has said she strongly believes that people should date within their income bracket, arguing that financial compatibility can help prevent unnecessary conflict in relationships and marriage.
Speaking on a recent episode of the MENtality Podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Makinwa said many relationship problems arise when partners have vastly different financial expectations and lifestyles. She maintained that dating someone within one’s economic class reduces the chances of “stories that touch.”
She also criticised some men for pursuing women whose lifestyles they cannot sustain, only to later accuse women of being materialistic. According to her, many women who support their partners through difficult times are eventually treated poorly when those partners become financially successful.
Makinwa added that money does not change people but reveals their true character, saying financial success often exposes attitudes that were previously hidden.
Her comments have sparked widespread debate on social media, with some agreeing that financial compatibility is important in relationships, while others argued that love should not be defined by income levels
