Students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo, have accused newly passed-out soldiers from the Nigerian Army Depot, Osogbo, of invading private student hostels, assaulting residents and carting away more than 60 mobile phones and other valuables. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday evening.
According to the university, the soldiers allegedly beat male students, stripped some female students, and subjected them to sexual harassment. There were also allegations that a female student was raped, although the university said it had not yet verified that claim. At least two students were hospitalised, with one later discharged.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Clement Adebooye, visited the affected hostels on Tuesday and condemned the attack, describing it as a disturbing incident. He said the matter had been formally reported to the leadership of the Army Depot, Osogbo, expressing disappointment that personnel from a nearby military facility allegedly carried out the assault.
The university’s spokesperson, Ademola Adesoji, said over 20 students had been identified as victims and confirmed that more than 60 electronic gadgets, including phones, were taken during the invasion. He added that three of the alleged perpetrators had been identified and brought to the campus as discussions with military authorities continued.
In response, the Army Depot, Osogbo, described the incident as unfortunate, stating that it was inconsistent with the values of the Nigerian Army. Military authorities confirmed that some personnel had been arrested and that the Commandant had ordered a full investigation, promising that anyone found culpable would face disciplinary action. Students also staged protests, demanding justice and improved security
