Rotary International District 9112, led by the Rotary Club of Ikoyi, has launched a large-scale vision and hearing screening programme aimed at tackling preventable sight and hearing impairments among public primary school pupils in Lagos State.
The initiative, flagged off on July 6, 2026, at Obalende Primary School, Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, is funded through the Rotary Global Grant, with support from the District Designated Fund (DDF) and several local and international partners.
In the first phase of the programme, more than 350 pupils from ten public primary schools within the Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area (LCDA) were screened for vision and hearing challenges. The project forms part of Rotary District 9112’s broader goal of reaching 50,000 public primary school pupils across Lagos State.
Beyond screening, the initiative provides comprehensive medical support for children diagnosed with hearing or vision impairments. Beneficiaries will receive prescription eyeglasses, hearing aids, medications and corrective surgeries where necessary, ensuring that identified conditions are treated rather than merely diagnosed.
Speaking at the event, District Governor of Rotary International District 9112, Rotarian Layi Abidoye, reaffirmed Rotary’s commitment to ensuring every child with serious hearing or vision problems receives the required medical care. He noted that the programme will gradually expand across Lagos State as part of Rotary International’s mission to create lasting impact in communities.
President of the Rotary Club of Ikoyi, Rotarian Christopher Ehiogie, described the intervention as the club’s flagship service project for the 2026–2027 Rotary year. He said the programme reflects Rotary International’s theme, “Unite for Good to Create Lasting Impact,” while supporting the organisation’s focus on basic education, child health and disease prevention.
Assistant Governor and Primary Contact for the Global Grant Project, Rotarian Basirat Giwa, disclosed that Rotary plans to return in the next academic session to continue the screening exercise. She also called on governments at all levels to sustain the initiative by building on Rotary’s intervention.
The programme received commendation from officials of the Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, with the Supervisor for Education, Mrs. Funlola Adedayo, praising Rotary and its partners for bringing the life-changing intervention to public school children.
The project was implemented in collaboration with several Rotary clubs in Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States, alongside strategic partners including the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Decibel, Unique Eye Centre, GSS Global Sight Solutions (UK), Vintage Hearing Foundation and Laider Consulting.
By combining early detection with access to treatment, the Rotary Global Grant project is expected to improve the health, learning outcomes and overall quality of life of thousands of children across Lagos State.
