The Presidency has launched a sharp rebuttal to former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, describing him as “clueless” over his recent call for President Bola Tinubu to resign. According to the Presidency, Obi’s comments were “childish, illogical and irresponsible.”
In a statement issued by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said Obi’s demand for Tinubu’s resignation reflected a poor understanding of Nigeria’s constitutional democracy. It argued that Nigeria operates a presidential system of government, under which a president cannot simply resign because of opposition criticism or economic challenges.
The Presidency accused Obi of attempting to score political points by exploiting national issues, insisting that the Tinubu administration remains focused on implementing reforms aimed at stabilising the economy, tackling insecurity and improving governance. It maintained that while Nigerians have the right to criticise government policies, calls for the President to resign were not grounded in constitutional or political reality.
The exchange follows Obi’s recent criticism of the Federal Government over the country’s economic and security situation, during which he argued that President Tinubu should consider stepping down if he could not effectively address Nigeria’s challenges
