The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the deaths of two senior retired officers—Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Adeleke Taiwo Olatunde (Rtd.) and Commissioner of Police (CP) Hassan Saleh Gwani (Rtd.)—describing their passing as a significant loss to the Force and the nation. The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu.
According to the police, AIG Olatunde passed away on July 23, 2026, at his residence in Lagos, just months after retiring from active service. CP Gwani died earlier on July 19, 2026, while receiving medical treatment in Cairo, Egypt. Both officers were remembered for their decades of dedicated service, professionalism and commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
In its tribute, the Force said the late officers served with distinction throughout their careers and made lasting contributions to policing and public safety in Nigeria. The police leadership extended heartfelt condolences to their families, friends and former colleagues, describing them as officers whose dedication and integrity brought honour to the institution.
“The leadership of the Force conveys its deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the departed officers, commending their selfless service and honour to the nation,” the statement read. The Force also prayed for the peaceful repose of their souls and for strength for their loved ones during this difficult period.
The deaths of the two senior officers come at a time when the Nigeria Police Force has continued to honour the legacies of retired personnel who contributed significantly to law enforcement and national security. Colleagues and stakeholders have described their passing as a reminder of the sacrifices made by officers in the line of duty and their enduring impact on policing in Nigeria.
