The Bayelsa State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of Stanley Okebaram, a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member whose body was recovered in Nembe Local Government Area after he was reported missing. Police authorities said detectives have begun a discreet probe to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Musa Mohammed, confirmed the development, stating that the deceased’s body had been deposited in a morgue pending the outcome of investigations. Okebaram, a 27-year-old Civil Engineering graduate and former Students’ Union Government President of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, had been serving in the riverine Nembe Creek community before his disappearance.
According to police sources, the missing person report was filed on July 25, 2026, by a fellow corps member after repeated attempts to reach Okebaram by phone proved unsuccessful. The report prompted security operatives to launch a search operation in the creek community, which eventually led to the discovery of his lifeless body in a body of water. While some reports have alleged he may have been attacked by unidentified persons, the police have not confirmed the cause of death and say investigations are ongoing.
The tragic incident has sparked concern among NYSC members and residents of Bayelsa State, particularly over the safety of corps members posted to remote and riverine communities. The case has renewed calls for stronger security measures and improved welfare for serving corps members deployed to high-risk areas across the country.
Police urged members of the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues, assuring that every effort is being made to establish the facts surrounding the incident. Authorities said anyone found responsible, if foul play is established, will be brought to justice in accordance with the law.
