Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have killed two suspected kidnappers during a gun battle along the Ilu-Abo section of the Akure–Owo Expressway in Akure North Local Government Area, foiling what police believe was a planned kidnapping operation.

According to the police, about seven masked gunmen stormed Olaiya Block Industry, beside Ilu-Abo High School, at around 3:30 a.m. and demanded to see the owner of the business. Officers attached to the Federal Highway Patrol Unit responded swiftly to a distress call and engaged the suspects in a fierce exchange of gunfire.

Police spokesperson DSP Abayomi Jimoh said two of the suspected kidnappers were killed, while five others escaped into nearby bushes with suspected gunshot wounds. A manhunt has been launched to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Items recovered from the scene include:

  • A locally fabricated pistol.
  • Live cartridges.
  • Four mobile phones.
  • Several face masks.
  • Two ATM cards believed to belong to the suspects or previous victims.

The bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital, Akure, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad for further investigation. Police urged residents to report anyone seeking treatment for gunshot wounds, as such individuals may be linked to the escaped suspects
