Human Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has criticized the Nigeria Police Force over the reported arrest and questioning of the father of Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, the self-acclaimed Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), saying such an action is unconstitutional and unlawful.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Falana, who represents Adeyemi, argued that Nigerian law prohibits the arrest or detention of a suspect’s relatives. He cited the Constitution, the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), and the Nigeria Police Act, insisting that family members cannot be arrested in place of a suspect.

Falana, however, disclosed that the police later contacted him to clarify that Adeyemi’s father was not formally arrested but was invited to assist investigators. According to him, officers said the elderly man was taken to identify a location relevant to the investigation, made a statement that was not under caution, and was subsequently released along with the relative who accompanied him.

Despite the clarification, Falana maintained that the police should have obtained the man’s statement at his residence instead of taking him to a police station. He expressed hope that law enforcement agencies would avoid similar actions in future investigations.

The controversy is part of the wider investigation into the alleged PFIPC “ghost agency,” for which Adeyemi is facing charges including forgery, impersonation, and conspiracy before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
