Political Political economist and former presidential candidate Pat Utomi has reiterated his call for an age limit for Nigeria’s executive political offices, saying anyone above 70 years should not contest for political office, particularly the presidency and governorship.
Speaking on the state of Nigeria’s politics and the 2027 elections, Utomi argued that the country needs younger, more energetic leaders capable of meeting the demands of governance. He said the presidency should not become “a retirement home” for elderly politicians who may struggle with the physical and mental demands of office.
According to him, while older politicians could continue serving in legislative roles, executive positions such as president and governor require a higher level of energy and should, in his view, be limited to candidates below the age of 70.
Utomi has made similar remarks in the past, linking his proposal to broader calls for political reform and generational leadership renewal ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, Nigeria’s Constitution currently does not prescribe a maximum age limit for candidates seeking elective office
