The death toll from the collapse of a three-storey mixed-use building along Baale Road, Ajuwon, Ogun State, has risen to three, while 12 people have been rescued alive from the rubble. Emergency responders are continuing search and recovery operations to ensure no additional victims remain trapped beneath the debris.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it joined the rescue mission at the request of the Ogun State Government, deploying its elite response team and heavy-duty rescue equipment to support local emergency services. The operation is being carried out alongside the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigeria Police Force, the Ogun State Fire Service, the Amotekun Corps and other responders.
According to LASEMA, those confirmed dead include an adult woman, a baby girl and a 75-year-old man. The 12 rescued victims were pulled from the wreckage and taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Rescue officials said operations would continue until the site is fully cleared and all occupants are accounted for.
A preliminary structural assessment also revealed that an adjoining bungalow was severely weakened by the collapse and now poses a significant safety risk. Authorities said the structure would undergo a controlled demolition to prevent a secondary collapse and protect rescue workers and nearby residents.
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the deployment reflected Lagos State’s commitment to supporting neighbouring states during emergencies. He also urged developers and property owners to comply strictly with building regulations and carry out regular structural integrity assessments to help prevent future building collapses. Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the incident, while investigations are expected to commence after rescue operations are concluded.
