The legal team representing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has threatened legal action against News Central Television and a guest on one of its programmes, Chigozie Nnabugwu, over remarks allegedly calling for Kanu’s extrajudicial killing. The lawyers described the comments as unlawful, dangerous and capable of inciting violence while Kanu’s legal proceedings remain before the court.
In a statement issued by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, the legal team condemned comments made during News Central’s Breakfast Xtra programme, where Nnabugwu reportedly argued that killing Kanu would restore normalcy in Nigeria’s South-East. The lawyers said the remarks amounted to a direct threat to Kanu’s life and undermined the ongoing judicial process.
The legal team argued that the comments could amount to offences under Section 24(1) of the Cybercrimes Act, which prohibits electronic communications that threaten life or are capable of causing a breakdown of law and order. They also suggested that additional criminal liability could arise under the Criminal Code for alleged incitement to violence.
Kanu’s lawyers further criticised News Central Television for broadcasting the remarks, warning that media organisations have a responsibility to prevent the dissemination of content that could encourage violence or interfere with ongoing court proceedings. They demanded that Nnabugwu publicly retract his statement and that the television station issue an unconditional on-air apology.
As of the time of reporting, neither News Central Television nor Chigozie Nnabugwu had publicly responded to the legal team’s demands. The lawyers said they are reviewing all available legal options, including filing complaints with the appropriate regulatory and judicial authorities, while insisting that disputes surrounding Kanu’s case should be resolved through the courts and in accordance with the rule of law.
