The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 38-year-old South African woman, identified as Will Jessica Ann, for allegedly attempting to smuggle 5.75 kilograms of heroin into Nigeria through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja.
According to the NDLEA, the suspect was apprehended during the inward clearance of passengers arriving on Qatar Airways Flight QR1433 from Doha. Officials said the illicit drug was concealed inside her luggage in an apparent attempt to evade airport security checks.
In a disturbing twist, the agency disclosed that the woman was travelling with her three-year-old son, allegedly using the child as a cover to avoid suspicion during screening. NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi described the tactic as one of the many desperate methods employed by international drug traffickers.
The arrest forms part of the agency’s ongoing nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking and transnational narcotics networks. NDLEA said investigations are underway to uncover other individuals connected to the attempted smuggling operation and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening airport surveillance and bringing drug traffickers to justice.
The agency has continued to urge members of the public to remain vigilant and support efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking, warning that criminal syndicates are increasingly adopting sophisticated methods to move narcotics across international borders.
