The Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has facilitated the installation of a free campus-wide Wi-Fi network at the Federal College of Education, Okene, as part of efforts to improve digital access for students and staff. The project was officially unveiled on Sunday.

According to a statement by her media aide, Mike Idoko, the initiative is designed to enhance teaching, learning, research, innovation, and digital inclusion within the institution. It also follows the senator’s recent “Growing Kogi Central, Building Our Future” 10,000 Economic Trees Project.

Speaking at the inauguration, Akpoti-Uduaghan said internet access has become an essential educational tool rather than a luxury.

She said the free Wi-Fi initiative would:

  • Improve access to international learning resources and digital libraries.
  • Support online certification programmes and virtual learning.
  • Enable students to acquire skills in artificial intelligence, software development, entrepreneurship, and remote work.
  • Reduce the financial burden of purchasing mobile data.

Students welcomed the intervention, describing it as a major boost to academic activities. Many said it would improve research, innovation, and technology-driven entrepreneurship while lowering their internet costs. Education stakeholders also praised the project, noting that reliable internet connectivity is now critical for modern higher education.

The project is part of the senator’s broader digital inclusion agenda, having earlier launched free public internet hubs in parts of Kogi Central.
