The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has assured residents that the waste collection challenges affecting parts of the state will ease within the next six to eight months, as the government ramps up investments in sanitation infrastructure and waste evacuation equipment. The assurance was given by LAWMA’s Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Badagry.
Gbadegesin dismissed reports suggesting that local governments were taking over LAWMA’s waste management responsibilities, explaining that the councils remain partners in the state’s sanitation drive. According to him, each local government is acquiring two compactor trucks, while the Lagos State Government is also procuring additional waste collection vehicles to strengthen service delivery across the state.
He attributed the recent delays in waste evacuation to Lagos’ rapidly growing population and the corresponding increase in daily waste generation. To address the problem, the state government has commenced the construction of new waste disposal facilities and is expanding existing infrastructure to improve operational efficiency and reduce turnaround time for waste collection.
The LAWMA boss expressed optimism that residents would begin to notice improvements in waste evacuation before the end of the week, particularly in communities experiencing the most severe collection delays. He also urged Lagosians to properly bag and store their refuse, avoid dumping waste on roadsides, and promptly pay their approved Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators to support efficient waste management.
Gbadegesin further encouraged residents to report persistent service lapses through LAWMA’s customer service channels, assuring them that complaints would receive prompt attention. He reiterated that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility and called on all Lagosians to support ongoing government efforts to build a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable city.
