At least four people have been killed and several others injured following a violent clash in the Ojoo area of Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State, triggered by a dispute involving a Point of Sale (PoS) transaction.
According to reports, the violence began on Tuesday night after an argument involving a PoS operator, wheelbarrow pushers, and a commercial tricycle (keke) rider over a transaction. The disagreement escalated, leading to the killing of the tricycle rider and sparking retaliatory attacks that continued into Wednesday morning.
Witnesses said the unrest forced traders to shut their businesses, including those at the popular Ojoo Terminal Bus Station, while gunfire claimed additional lives, including a young boy who had reportedly gone out to buy noodles. Several other people sustained injuries and were taken to hospital.
The Oyo State Government has condemned the violence and appealed for calm. During an assessment visit on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal blamed the unrest on criminal elements rather than any ethnic group, assuring residents that those responsible would be identified and prosecuted. Security personnel have since been deployed to restore normalcy in the area
