No fewer than four people have lost their lives following a devastating rainstorm that swept through Kware Local Government Area of Sokoto State, leaving hundreds of residents displaced and causing widespread destruction to homes and public infrastructure. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the incident after conducting an assessment of the affected communities.
According to the Head of Response, Research and Statistics at NEMA’s Sokoto Field Office, Tukur Abubakar, the disaster affected several communities, including Mallamawa, Mai Mushe, Kaura, Sabon Gari, Rungin Tsamiya, and surrounding settlements. Preliminary findings showed that hundreds of households were impacted, many residents sustained injuries, and four fatalities were recorded as a result of the violent storm.
The assessment team also reported extensive damage to residential buildings and key public facilities, including a primary school and a hospital, highlighting the severity of the disaster. NEMA said the exercise was carried out to determine the extent of the destruction and identify the immediate humanitarian needs of affected residents.
Emergency officials said efforts are underway to provide relief materials and other forms of assistance to displaced families. They urged residents in vulnerable communities to remain alert during the rainy season and to heed weather advisories issued by relevant authorities to reduce the risk of future disasters.
The latest tragedy adds to growing concerns over the impact of extreme weather events across Nigeria, where heavy rains and windstorms have continued to claim lives and destroy property in several states. Authorities have called for stronger disaster preparedness measures and improved community resilience to mitigate the effects of such natural disasters.
