The Federal Government has commenced arrangements to evacuate another batch of Nigerians willing to return from South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks and anti-immigration protests in the country. The latest evacuation is part of an ongoing voluntary repatriation programme coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the Ministry, the evacuation will be carried out at no cost to the returnees, with the Federal Government fully funding the operation. The returnees are expected to arrive aboard a special Air Peace flight, after which they will undergo documentation, profiling and receive reintegration support before reuniting with their families.
The development follows the successful evacuation of earlier batches, including 258 Nigerians who returned to Lagos in June after fleeing the unrest. Government officials said the exercise is aimed at protecting Nigerians affected by the violence and ensuring their safe return home.
The latest move comes amid fresh anti-immigration demonstrations in South Africa, where thousands have marched against foreign nationals. The protests have prompted many migrants, including Nigerians, to seek assistance from their embassies or leave the country voluntarily.
The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Nigerians abroad and said it will continue to monitor the situation while providing necessary support to affected citizens
