Former Benue State Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. David Salifu, has died after sustaining gunshot injuries during an attack by suspected bandits along the Wukari–Makurdi road.
Salifu, who served as SSG during the administration of former Governor Gabriel Suswam, was also a lecturer at the Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State. According to reports, he was travelling from Wukari to Makurdi on Thursday when armed men intercepted his vehicle on the outskirts of Wukari.
Sources said the attackers ordered him to alight from his vehicle and mount a motorcycle. He was reportedly shot after challenging the assailants. He was initially taken to a hospital in Wukari before being transferred to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, where he died in the early hours of Friday.
A close associate of the deceased and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) senatorial candidate for Benue South, David Olofu, confirmed Salifu’s death, describing him as a trusted confidant and a member of his campaign council.
As of the time of reporting, the Taraba State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the attack, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident were ongoing.
