Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has honoured 13-year-old Chimdiebube Onwubiko Victor, who recently made Nigeria proud by winning a gold medal in Mathematics and a silver medal in Science at the 2026 International STEM Olympiad held in Rome, Italy. The governor received the young champion at the Lion Building in Enugu, describing his achievement as a moment of pride for both the state and the nation.
In a statement shared on his official social media platforms, Governor Mbah praised Chimdiebube’s exceptional performance, saying it reflects the values of discipline, hard work and quality education. He also commended the student’s Mathematics teacher, Chisom Unachukwu, and Evergreen Schools, Enugu, for nurturing a talent capable of competing successfully on the global stage.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming education through the Smart Green Schools Initiative, noting that the programme is designed to provide children across Enugu State with opportunities to develop their talents and excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). He expressed confidence that more young innovators would emerge as investments in education continue.
Chimdiebube was among three Nigerian students who recorded outstanding performances at the international competition, which attracted participants from more than 150 countries. Alongside him, Don Anele Munachimso Marvelous won double gold medals in Mathematics and Science, while Egejurum Onyedikachi Ethan claimed gold in Mathematics and emerged the world’s best in the Primary Mathematics category.
Education stakeholders have described the students’ achievements as evidence of Nigeria’s growing potential in STEM education and innovation. Governor Mbah said Chimdiebube’s success should inspire other young Nigerians to pursue academic excellence, adding that the state government will continue supporting initiatives that empower students to compete and succeed on the global stage.
