Commuters and motorists across Lagos State are lamenting the rapid deterioration of major roads as persistent rainfall has reopened potholes and craters, leading to severe traffic congestion, longer travel times, and increased vehicle maintenance costs.

A visit to several affected areas showed that roads in Isheri, Agege, Shasha, Akowonjo, Ikeja, Berger, Obanikoro, Fadeyi, Ilupeju, and parts of the Lekki-Epe Expressway have developed deep potholes and waterlogged sections, forcing motorists to slow down or swerve into adjoining lanes to avoid damage.

Residents and commuters said the worsening road conditions have:

  • Increased travel times, with journeys that previously took 20 minutes now lasting up to an hour.
  • Raised transport fares due to prolonged traffic delays.
  • Increased vehicle repair costs, particularly for tyres and suspension systems.
  • Heightened the risk of road accidents and flooding.

Some residents noted that the rains have rapidly worsened roads that were previously motorable. They called on the Lagos State Government to begin urgent palliative repairs before the peak of the rainy season. An X user also urged authorities to fix a large hole between the Fadeyi and Obanikoro sections of Ikorodu Road.

When contacted by Punch, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, did not respond to calls or text messages seeking the government’s reaction before publication
