The Benue State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old suspected supplier of ammunition to bandits during a security operation in Guma Local Government Area, recovering 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition believed to have been destined for criminal elements. The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to disrupt the illegal flow of weapons and ammunition in the state.
According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Peter Aondona, the suspect, identified as Joro Jarkata, a native of Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, was apprehended during a stop-and-search operation conducted by operatives of the Guma Police Division. Police said the suspect was travelling on a motorcycle with another individual who fled into a nearby bush after spotting security operatives.
A search carried out on Jarkata led to the recovery of the concealed ammunition. The police disclosed that the suspect has been taken into custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Makurdi for further investigation. Detectives are also working to determine the source of the ammunition, its intended destination and those behind the supply network.
The Commissioner of Police in Benue State, Cletus Nwadiogbu, commended the officers involved in the operation for their vigilance and professionalism, describing the recovery as a significant step in the fight against armed banditry and the proliferation of illegal firearms. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks threatening peace and security across the state.
The police also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest security agency. Authorities expressed confidence that continued public cooperation and intelligence sharing would strengthen efforts to curb the movement of illegal weapons and improve security across Benue State.
