The Abia State Civil Service Commission has urged 811 newly recruited healthcare workers to uphold the principles of integrity, professionalism and compassion as they begin their careers in the state’s public health system. The charge was delivered during a one-day orientation programme held in Umuahia to prepare the recruits for public service.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Abia State Civil Service Commission, Pastor Mrs. Roseline Uche Jerry, described the new employees including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, medical laboratory scientists and other health professionals as “frontline defenders of life.” She reminded them that they are now stewards of public trust and urged them to uphold five core values: integrity, professionalism, respect, compassion and patriotism.

Jerry also outlined key expectations for the new workers, urging them to avoid absenteeism, work collaboratively with colleagues, report challenges through the appropriate channels and strictly adhere to ethical standards. She warned against demanding unofficial payments from patients or diverting hospital supplies, encouraging them to make use of the state’s whistleblower policy whenever they observe misconduct.

According to her, the administration of Governor Alex Otti is making significant investments in the health sector because quality healthcare is a fundamental right. She said the government expects the newly recruited personnel to help restore public confidence in the state’s healthcare system by delivering affordable, accessible and high-quality medical services to residents.

The orientation programme featured lectures on the Abia State Public Service Rules, civil service ethics, career progression, SERVICOM standards, ongoing public service reforms and expectations for effective healthcare delivery. Officials expressed confidence that the newly recruited workforce would strengthen the state’s healthcare system and improve service delivery across public health facilities.
