Security operatives have launched a large-scale search operation after suspected ISWAP terrorists abducted an unspecified number of students writing the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations at Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack occurred at about 9 a.m. on Monday, when the gunmen reportedly stormed the school, fired sporadically, and whisked away several students. Women selling food within the school premises were also reportedly abducted during the raid.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said security forces responded quickly and engaged the attackers, preventing what could have been a larger abduction. He added that the Commissioner of Police has deployed the Area Commander in Askira/Uba, while police, the military, and other security agencies are combing nearby forests in search of the abducted victims.
Local sources also reported that one teacher was killed and another sustained gunshot injuries during the attack, although police said they were still verifying casualty figures and the exact number of abducted students.
Authorities said rescue efforts are ongoing as investigations continue
