Lagos State recorded the highest number of new HIV infections in Nigeria, with 10,430 cases, as the country’s total number of new infections reached 102,025, according to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare’s State of the Health of the Nation Report 2025.

The report ranked Rivers State second with 6,287 new infections, followed by Kano with 6,106. Akwa Ibom recorded 5,413 cases, while Benue reported 5,209, making them among the states with the highest HIV burden in the country.

Health experts attributed the continued spread of HIV to factors including low testing rates, poor awareness, stigma, risky sexual behaviour, and inadequate access to prevention and treatment services in some communities.

The report stressed the need to expand HIV testing, early diagnosis, access to antiretroviral therapy, and public education, particularly in high-burden states, to reduce new infections and improve health outcomes.

The findings highlight that, despite progress in HIV control over the years, Nigeria continues to face a significant public health challenge, with the disease remaining concentrated in a number of states
