Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has alleged that there is a fresh plot by unnamed elements within the ruling establishment to prevent the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from participating in the 2027 general elections. He warned that any attempt to exclude the opposition party from the ballot would constitute a serious attack on Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Atiku claimed to have received credible information that anti-democratic forces were coordinating efforts to keep the ADC out of the electoral process through political and legal means. He, however, did not provide evidence to support the allegation.
The former vice president urged Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation, to defend democratic principles and resist any move to determine which opposition parties are allowed to contest elections. He argued that if the ruling party is confident of its popularity, it should not fear competition from the ADC.
Atiku also maintained that the ADC remains a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 polls and expressed confidence that any alleged attempts to sideline the party would not succeed. As of the time of reporting, there had been no official response from the Federal Government or the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the allegations
