President Bola Tinubu has stated that Nigeria has recorded significant gains in the fight against terrorism, saying that terror-related deaths have fallen by 81% since 2015 and that more than 13,000 terrorists have been neutralised in the past year. He made the remarks during his 2026 Democracy Day address.
According to the President, the reduction in fatalities reflects sustained military operations, improved intelligence gathering, and closer coordination among security agencies. He also noted that the government continues to encourage defections from insurgent groups while maintaining pressure on active terrorists.
Tinubu said:
“Over 13,000 terrorists have been neutralised in the past year.”
He added that more than 124,000 fighters and their dependents have surrendered through government deradicalisation and rehabilitation programmes, including Operation Safe Corridor.
The figures cited by the President are consistent with earlier statements from the Presidency and the Ministry of Information, which reported an 81% decline in terror-related deaths and thousands of terrorists killed, arrested, or convicted in recent years.
Despite these claims, security challenges remain in parts of the country, particularly in the North-East, North-West, and some North-Central states, where attacks by terrorist groups, bandits, and kidnappers still occur.
The President reiterated that terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers must either surrender or face the full force of the law, while pledging continued investment in national security and counter-terrorism operations.
